Baby triceratops crochet

Sara the Baby Triceratops

Materials:

  • Weight 6 yarn
  • Size J/6.0mm
  • Stuffing
  • Safety Eyes or felt eyes
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker

Abbreviations:

  • mr = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in next stitch)
  • dec = invisible decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
  • st = stitch

This pattern uses weight 6 blanket yarn. Any yarn may be used, but your crochet hook size will be different. Use a hook 1-2 sizes smaller than your yarn calls for. This pattern is in US crochet terms.

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds and using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch is recommended.

*Safety eyes are NOT recommended for children who are three years old or younger.

The Triceratops pictured in the pattern is made with Sweet Snuggles Lite

Head & Body

These are worked as one piece, starting at the top of the head.

R1: 6 sc in a magic ring

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)

R5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)

R6: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)

R7-11 (5 rows): 36 sc

R12: (4 sc, dec) x 6 (30)

Place safety eyes between rows 9-10 about 6 stitches apart.

R13: 30 sc

R14: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)

R15: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

R16: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)

R17: 12 sc

Stuff head firmly.

R18: 12 inc (24)

R19: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)

R20-23 (4 rows): 30SC

R24: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)

R25: 24 sc

R26: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

R27: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)

R28: 6 dec

Stuff firmly, FO, sew hole shut.

Frill

R1: Chain 36

R2: Beginning in the second chain from the hook, (5 sc, inc) x 5, 5 sc (40). Chain 1, turn.

Round 3 - (5sc, 2 hdc inc) x 5, 5 sc (50). Chain 1, turn.

R4: 7 sc, bo, (8sc, bo) x 4, 6 sc (50)

Slip stitch and FO. Leave a long tail and sew onto the head, beginning where the neck meets the head. The frill should reach across the head onto the other side of the neck. To ensure it is straight while you are sewing, you can use bobby pins to pin it in place while you work.

Arms – make two

R1: 6 sc in a magic ring

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: 12 sc BLO

R4: 12 sc

R5: (2 sc, dec) x 3 (9)

Stuff arms, FO, and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the body just under the neck about 6 visible stitches apart.

Feet – make two

R1: 8 sc in a magic ring

R2: 8 inc (16)

R3: 16 sc BLO

R4-6 (3 rows): 16 sc

R7: (2 sc, dec) x 4 (12)

Stuff foot, FO, and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the body directly below the arms. I like to sew them about 3 rows up from the base of the body.

Snout

R1: 6 sc in a magic ring

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)

R4: 18 sc

Stuff lightly, FO, and sew between the eyes about two rows up from the neck. Stuff as you sew.

Tail

R1: 6 sc in a magic ring

R2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9)

R3: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12)

R4: 4 sc, 4 inc, 4 sc (16)

R5: 5 sc, 6 inc, 5 sc (22)

R6: 22 sc

FO and stuff. Sew onto the back of the dinosaur, centered between the legs between rows 4-9

Horns (Make 3)

R1: 4 sc in a magic ring

R2: (1 sc, inc) x 2 (6)

FO and sew two onto the head, directly behind each eye. Sew one onto the middle of the snout.

Such a cute pattern! I’ve been obsessed with making them in different color combinations. I use Bernat blanket yarn with 18mm safety eyes, and it comes out beautifully!

Bri

What size safety eyes are used for Sara the triceratop?
Thank you!
