Low Sew Seahorse - Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:

  • Weight 6 yarn 
  • Size J/6.0mm 
  • Stuffing
  • Safety Eyes or felt eyes 
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker

Abbreviations:

  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet 
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in next stitch)
  • dec = invisible decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch


This pattern uses weight 6 blanket yarn. Any yarn may be used, but your crochet hook size will be different. Use a hook 1-2 sizes smaller than your yarn calls for. This pattern is in US crochet terms.

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds and using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch is recommended.  

Body

R1: 6 sc in a magic ring

R2: 6 inc (12)

R3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18)

R4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)

R5-7 (3 rounds): 24 sc

R8: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

Insert safety eyes between rounds 5 and 6.

R9: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)

Stuff the head and continue stuffing as you go until round 19.

R10: (1 sc, dec) x 4 (8)

R11: 8 inc (16)

R12: 16 sc

R13: (3 sc, inc) x 4 (20)

R14-18 (4 rounds): 20 sc

R19: (3 sc, dec) x 4 (16)

Do not stuff past this round.

R20-22 (3 rounds): 16

R23: 8 dec (8)

R24-29 (7 rounds): 8 sc

Fasten off and sew hole shut. Curl tail onto itself and place a few stitches to keep it in place.

 

Snout

R1: 5 sc in a magic ring

R2: 5 sc in the back loop only

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the center of the face, about 1 round down from the eyes.

 

Spikes

With a secondary color, insert your hook into the top of the head in the center. We are going to surface crochet.

Chain 3. In the next stitch, 1 dc, ch 1. Sl st.

Repeat until you reach the back of the neck. Fasten off and weave in your end.

 

Back fin

Chain 4. In the first chain stitch, work 2 dc. Chain 4 and sl st into the first chain stitch.

Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Sew onto the back of the seahorse, about 2 rounds down from the neck.
