Baby Harp Seal - Easy Crochet Pattern!

Materials:

  • Weight 6 yarn 
  • Size J/6.0mm 
  • Stuffing
  • Safety Eyes or felt eyes 
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch Marker

Abbreviations:

  • mr = magic ring
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in next stitch)
  • dec = invisible decrease (sc 2 stitches together)
  • st = stitch
  • FO = fasten off

This pattern uses weight 6 blanket yarn. Any yarn may be used, but your crochet hook size will be different. Use a hook 1-2 sizes smaller than your yarn calls for. This pattern is in US crochet terms.

This pattern is worked in continuous rounds and using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch is recommended. 

*Safety eyes are NOT recommended for children who are three years old or younger.

Body & Head

We will begin by working at the tail of the seal.

Make 2:

R1: 4 sc in a magic ring

R2: (1 sc, inc) x 2 (6)

R3: (2 sc, inc) x 2 (8)

R4: 8 sc

Fasten off of the first piece only. After making the second, sc into the last stitch of round 4 of the first piece to attach them together. Continue onto round 5:

R5: 16 sc around both pieces

R6: 8 dec (8)

R7: 8 inc (16)

R8-9 (2 rounds): 16 sc

R10: (1 sc, inc) x 8 (24)

R11-12 (2 rounds): 24 sc

R13: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)

R14: 30 sc

R15: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)

R16: 24 sc

Begin stuffing the fins and body. Keep stuffing as you go.

R17: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

R18: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)

R19: 12 inc (24)

R20: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)

R21-26 (6 rounds): 30 sc 

R27: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24)

Insert safety eyes between rounds 22 and 23, about 4 visible stitches apart.

R28: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18)

R29: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12)

R30: 6 dec (6)

 

Fins (Make 2)

R1: 4 sc in a magic ring

R2: (1 sc, inc) x 2 (6)

R3: 6 sc

R4: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9)

R5: 9 sc 

Do not stuff. Fold fin in half and 4 sc across to close. Sew horizontally onto the body of the seal, about 1 stitch down from the neck.

 

Muzzle: 

R1: Chain 4. Beginning in the second chain from the hook, 2 sc, inc. Working in the back of the chain, 2 sc, inc. (8)

R2: inc, 2 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, inc (12)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew onto the face of the seal, just below the eyes. Stuff lightly as you sew. Embroider a nose in black.
